Today I had the opportunity to check out the new PreSonus Studio One 5. The release comes with a host of new features, including the Show Page for live performance and Score View for written music via notion.

Being a mixer, the features don’t excite me, but don’t worry! There are a few things that will be great for mixers. Let’s check them out.

New Features

  1. Trim Clip – This is a welcome feature. It’s basically clip gain for those who come from Pro Tools. This make’s it easy to duck unwanted breaths and such while keeping things sounding natural.
  2. Mix Scenes – A new feature to studio one and one that I thought was the most inventive is Mix Scenes. It allows you to take snapshots of your mix as you progress. In other words, if you loved your drums sound from an hour ago, as long as you saved the mix scene, you can recall it instantly. This could be super helpful, but you gotta remember to save them as you move along in your mix. 🙂
  3. No Overlaps –  As minor a feature this is, it’s one of my favorites. If you used studio one four or below when you moved a file on top of another fil,e it would do this annoying greyed out thing. Now you can turn that off and so it’s much like pro tools or other DAW’s, and it overlaps without the grey area.

As you can see, the list for this mixer is a bit limited. I do wish they did more, but I understand the market they are aiming for are the people making music and producing music at home.

Check out the video below to see the features I listed in action and a few more features I liked. Also, free free to check out my mixing presets here, and if you need your songs mixed and master you can find me here.
